"Lord Jesus I long to be perfectly whole;
I want Thee forever to live in my soul;
Break down every idol, cast out every foe;
Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.
Lord Jesus, look down from Thy throne in the skies;
And help me to make a complete sacrifice;
I give up myself, and whatever I know;
Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow."
This old Sunday School hymn, with the same title as the first line, reminds me of Isaiah 1:18 where we read: ["Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.]”
We know from experience, that water is useful for washing… for cleansing, of dirt. But it is powerless to cleanse us from sin. Although in the Old Testament, there were ceremonial practices of washing to be clean, the cleanliness was temporary.
How thankful we can be that after Christ made His atoning sacrifice on the cross, we can experience His cleansing power as outlined in 1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
