“Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.”
(Genesis 1:14-15)
In the creation narrative of the planets and stars we have the descriptions of these as lights. In the beginning God created light; however, these celestial bodies were also for giving of light and for markers of the seasons and signs of the glory of God. The stars are often referred to as “signposts” for navigation and will play a part in God’s judgment on the earth. The birth of Christ was marked by “His star in the East”. As amazing as the stars are, there are several biblical injunctions against worshipping them or using them to predict the future. The truly fascinating thing about stars is their Creator. He is the only One we look to for worship or our future.
Here in coastal San Diego we rarely see many stars at night due to the marine layer and also artificial light pollution. However, once in awhile, when we get out in the country on a dark night like David in Psalm 19, we can say "The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork." God's creation testifies to how awesome He is.
