Sunday Devo - January 12, 2025

Matthew 5:34-37
But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.

In this passage Jesus is questioning why we would feel the need to swear to God when we speak. Why do people feel like they need to take God’s name in vain to prove a point? We really don’t. And we are reminded of this in verse 37 when it says to let our yes be yes and out no be no. As Christians we need to stand by what we say. So, if  you say you’re going to do it, do it; but don’t use the Lord’s name in an empty or insincere way. God loves us and wants us to be truthful and  upright in everything we say and do.
