The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God [Romans 8:16]
Let me share an experience I had 8 or 10 years ago, when we had planned a family trip
to Santa Barbara for a weekend, along with Lan’s parents, siblings, and their families. On the drive up, the dashboard lights lit up like Christmas and I realized with dismay that the car was stalling out. After getting towed to the nearest Pep Boys, we decided I would stay with the car, and Lan and most of the kids got a ride with her family to the planned destination. Imagine my surprise when they said they did not have an alternator in stock (on a Saturday) and maybe it would be the next day. After hunkering down in a hotel, only to return the next day and wait for hours in the lobby, I was again told… no, sorry- it would be fixed on Monday. Feeling a bit dejected, I requested that they change the front windshield wipers while they were at it. Monday came, and as the mechanic that worked on the car rang me up, I realized they had forgot to charge for the wipers. Yippee!! …the old nature inside of me thought- a small measure of justice for keeping me waiting for so long, and charging so much for the repair. But a split second later, I caught myself asking “Does that total include the new wipers?” The surprised mechanic sheepishly stated no, he forgot to include it, and then thanked me for my honesty. “I am a Christian”, I stated… “I can bargain with you, but I can’t cheat you!” We both shared a chuckle and in that moment, I felt a sudden connection.
We never know when we will have a chance to witness, even if it is one random person at a time!
