“O Love that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in Thee.
I give Thee back the life, I owe,
That in Thine ocean depths its flow may richer, fuller be.
O Light that follows all my way, I yield my flick’ring torch to Thee.
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
that in Thy sunshine’s blaze its day may brighter, fairer be
O cross that liftest up my head, I dare not ask to fly from Thee. I lay in dust, life’s glory dead, and from the ground there blossoms red,
life that shall endless be”
This song (O Love That Will Not Let Me Go) was written by George Matheson in the late 1800’s, a Scottish minister and hymn writer, who progressively lost his sight as a young adult. When he wrote this hymn, he had been blind for roughly twenty years, making the second verse about the flickering torch, especially poignant. As a man of faith, he was able to bless and encourage many, through this hymn.
It reminds me of God’s sovereignty in both life and death, as outlined in Romans 14:8. And the last verse, reminds me of a planted seed, that must die before it brings much fruit (John 12:24), as well as the bodies of the resurrected dead, as covered in 1 Corinthians 15: 35-50.
Thank God for the cross, and the hope that it provides, beyond the grave!
