Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. [Philippians 4:6]
This verse may look familiar to some, as it is one of the verses recently introduced in the
Scripture Memory challenge. As I read through and pondered the verse, I was struck by the
phrase “with thanksgiving”. This tied in with something Pastor Mike recently shared, about
using the A.C.T.S. guideline when praying.
A.C.T.S. is an acronym that stands for: Adoration-praising God for who He is and what He has done; Confession- admitting our sins and shortcomings and
seeking forgiveness; Thanksgiving- thanking God for all he has done; and Supplication- bringing our requests to God.
The acronym resonates with me, as it may with you…. It is logical, and provides a framework for how we can structure our prayers. And the referenced verse- simply reinforces the “T” from the acronym. We are to bring our supplications and requests…with thanksgiving. If we explore this topic, we may find that there are two main things we are to thank God for: His work in creation, as we are reminded of in Psalm 100, and His work in redemption (Revelation 5:9). In addition to these two, I am certain many of our hearts well up with joy as we thank God for all the things He has done for us, throughout our lives- and trust in His continued providence and protection, in the future.
