And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” (Matthew 4:2-4)
There are other places in the gospels that speak of Jesus being hungry. Even though He was God, He was also a man. In John 4 it talks about Jesus being weary from His journey.
So the devil looking for a weak spot in the spiritual armor of Jesus, focuses on the fact “He was hungry”.
One of the primary tools of the enemy is to twist or try to put doubt in the word of God. “If You are the Son of God”. The devil knew Jesus was God in the flesh, but tries to sow a seed of doubt by saying “if” or it could be translated “since”. The idea is that Jesus would use His creative power to satisfy His flesh (make bread).
Jesus simply quotes the word of God, in this case Deuteronomy 8:3. This is a good example for us. Our defense against spiritual attack is the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6). Also, Jesus did in fact multiply bread for others on several occasions. His example, however, is that He “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10).
