He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; nor he who loves abundance, with
increase. This also is vanity. [Ecclesiastes 5:10]
This is an interesting verse, penned by “the Preacher” (King Solomon, not Pastor Mike).
It illustrates our insatiable appetite, when it comes to material things. I am reminded of the
theory of the Hedonic treadmill, which from my view describes the futility of material pursuits,
or how we are often not much happier as our situation in life or fortune increases, but quickly
settle back to our previous levels of satisfaction.
I don’t think this verse is talking about basic essentials such as food and shelter, which are addressed in Matthew 6:25-34. This verse has to do with accumulating material wealth, and our tendency to be preoccupied with the same.
I love Pastor Mike’s frequent exhortation, about having a “light touch” on the things here below; after all, we will take none of our material possessions into eternity!
Let's strive to be spiritually minded, and to store up treasure in heaven, as outlined in Matthew 6:19-21, which concludes with: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
