Rejoice O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things, God will bring thee into judgement. Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from they flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity. [Ecclesiastes 11: 9-10]
I recently read thru the book of Ecclesiastes and pondered over these verses a bit. The last time I read through the book was a while ago, and I was struck by how certain verses may resonate differently with us, depending on our season of life. The general theme of the book explores various pursuits in life, and finds them to be unfulfilling in a worldly, temporal sense.
We see this played out in folks who experience tremendous success in life, but are not satisfied; and self-destruct through vices or other demons they battle with. Youth is too fleeting and precious to be wasted on selfish, foolish and empty pursuits. Although I am no longer young, these verses resonate as true; perhaps we grow a bit more introspective as we age. Chapter 12 verse 1 exhorts the reader to remember and seek God in our youth, and warns of the danger of waiting until one is older, after a lifetime of choices, habits, and rationalizations may limit and hamper our perspective. -Roy
