Greater is He that is in me…Greater is He that is in me;
Greater is He that is in me…. Than he that is in the world.
Satan's like a roaring lion…roaming to and fro’;
Seeking whom he may devour, the Bible tells us so
[1 John 4:4]
I was recently reminded of this hymn, after reading 1 John 4:4, “You are of God, little
children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
In the context of the chapter, this verse is contrasting the Spirit of Christ, and the spirit
of antichrist, illustrating that God is greater than Satan. The Holy Spirit that dwells within
believers in Christ, is stronger than Satan, and more than capable of protecting us from the
enemy’s attacks. Because of this realization, our trust and confidence is in God, and not in
ourselves or in our flesh- the power is of the Holy Spirit. This should bring us peace and joy, and deliver us from fear, as our trust and reliance is in God, and we seek to obey Him in fuller measure.
I think we often forget that the God that spoke the universe into existence, calmed the storm, and walked on water- is more than capable to deliver us from our struggles and battles with the enemy of our soul.
